Intergenerational Symposium in Strasbourg

The Pan-European Union France and the Pan-European Movement Austria organised an intergenerational symposium in Strasbourg from 18 to 20 November 2016.

The majority of participants were students from several European Union and European countries.

The meeting began with a visit to the European Parliament.

Arrival in Strasbourg on Thursday evening 17 November or Friday morning 18 November 2016.

First day - 18 November 2016

  • Morning: Visit to the European Parliament.
  • Lunch at the Comfort Hotel restaurant in Strasbourg-Montagne Verte. Short stopover in front of the stele commemorating the work of Johannes Gutenberg in Strasbourg-Montagne Verte.
  • Afternoon: guided tour of the city by historian Prof Philippe Nuss, possibly a boat tour of Strasbourg.
  • Evening: Reception at the town hall. Alain Terrenoire, President of Paneuropa Union International, presents the French concept of European governance.
  • Free evening.

Second day - 19 November 2016

Conference in the hall of the Regional Council of the French East in Strasbourg.

  • 9.00 Opening of the conference by Senator Jean Bizet or by his deputy Jean-Yves Cousin (1 quarter of an hour)
  • 9.15 à 10.45 ‘The European identity and its institutions’, by Johannes Laitenberger (Brussels), Director General/European Commission, or by another renowned speaker. Discussion of the speaker with students from several countries of the European Union. Among them Fabian Gerold (Maastricht/Bordeaux), student of political science ; Barbara Holl (Strasbourg), graduate lawyer. Moderation: Lorraine Picaper, Franco-German lawyer with a law firm in Berlin.
  • 10.45 Coffee break.
  • 11.00 to 11.30 ‘Labour relations in innovative companies in Germany, France, the Netherlands and some other European countries in the social market economy’, some theses by Hans-Georg Wieck (Berlin), former ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany, former head of the BND (1986-1990), lecturer at military academies and at the German-Polish University Viadrina.
  • 11.30 to 12.45 Business debate with Hans Georg Wieck; Gilles Dubois (Frankfurt am Main), Franco-German business lawyer; Rainhard Kloucek (Vienna), Secretary General of Paneuropa Austria; Stefan Haböck, European and International Relations Officer of Paneuropa Austria.
  • 13.00 Lunch (buffet) on site.
  • 14.00 to 14.30 "Eurotopia or Euroland? What future do the institutions of the European Union have?" by Stephen Lequet (Paris), lecturer at the Paris Institute of Political Science, Secretary General of Paneuropa France (CFUP).
  • 14.30 to 15.50 ‘Where does the money for Europe come from?’ by Jean-Yves Cousin, former mayoral deputy, former finance commissioner in France, 2nd chairman of Paneuropa France.
  • 15.50 Coffee break in the conference room.
  • 16.00 to 16.30 Discussion with students on this topic, panel: Christian Hoferer, maths student (Munich); Tornike Laghidze (Tbilisi/Georgia); Wladislawa Litiaga (Kiev/Ukraine); Franziskus Posselt, President of Paneuropa Germany; Dominik Possert, student (Graz).
  • 16.30 to 18.00 "Defending democracy: The 20 July 44, an uprising for freedom" by Felicitas von Aretin, author of the book “Die Enkel vom 20. Juli”. Ms von Aretin is the granddaughter of General Henning von Tresckow, organiser of the Stauffenberg attack on Hitler, and of Erwein von Aretin, resistance fighter against Hitler and prisoner in the Dachau concentration camp. Questions from students and young professionals to the speaker.
  • 18.00 to 19.00 ‘Young people - disoriented - their resocialisation’. Social workers and young Europeans give their opinions on the subject (including: Marie-Hélène Brun (Strasbourg); Tobias Kelliger (Paderborn); Laetitia Keller (Strasbourg), Valentina-Anna Strasser (Graz), Stephan Jarisch (Graz); and others).
  • 19.00 The discussion will continue on site over a convivial drink.
  • Free evening.

Third day - 20 November 2016

  • Visit and lecture at the former Nazi concentration camp Struthof-Natzweiler in Alsace. Alain Terrenoire, the son of Louis Terrenoire, resistance fighter, prisoner of the Dachau concentration camp and De Gaulle's minister, takes the floor.
  • Free evening.

Departure from Strasbourg on Monday morning 21 November 2016.

Lectures and discussions were in German, French and English with simultaneous translation.
