XXXII Furth Seminar on Montenegro

The Pan-European Youth of Bavaria organised the XXXII Furth Seminar from 22 to 24 November 2019 under the title ‘From outsider to frontrunner: Montenegro on the way to the European Union’.

The conference focussed on Montenegro as a country that is now referred to in tourist brochures as the ‘Pearl of the Adriatic’.

Debates centred on security policy, development policy and the coexistence of different religions and ethnic groups, as well as external influences and progress and problems in the EU accession process.

The choice of Furth im Wald (D) and Pilsen (CZ) as conference venues was characterised by cross-border reconciliation between Bavaria and the Czechs.

The small country of Montenegro, with a population of just 650,000, stretches between the mountains and the Mediterranean coast. The South-East European republic only declared its independence from Serbia in 2006.

The XXXII Furth Seminar focussed on a nation that does not receive much attention in public and political debates in Germany, but is of great geopolitical importance.

High-profile representatives from politics, government and society gave presentations at the congress and were available for discussion.
